Connections
Connections is a free program for families with children ages 0-5 that provides critical developmental information to parents during the first five years of their child’s life. This is done through a series of surveys called the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). These age specific questionnaires utilize playtime to help parents and caregivers both encourage healthy development of their children as well as identify any potential developmental delays. Questions allow children to play, move about, and practice daily living skills. Once parents enroll into the program, they begin to receive an ASQ in the mail every 2 to 6 months. Trained workers score the returned ASQs and provide feedback to the family including ASQ results, developmental newsletters and playtime ideas for infants and children, as well as parenting tips, newsletters with free and low cost local family activities and referrals to community services and resources.
Connections was created out of a community plan process, which identified increasing the number of children developmentally on track as a goal. Connections has demonstrated an efficient and effective way to reach this goal. Since the program began in 2003, there has been a steady increase in participation – increasing over 50% in 2005. Currently, more than 5600 children have participated in the program. Connections provides a fabulous opportunity to give support to families in an easy, systematic way.
